The 3 ports on the top are positioned to counter the natural "high and to the right" recoil by forcing gas pressure out of the holes to counter muzzle rise. The half-moon cuts on each side force the gas flat out to the right and left which keeps the barrel steady shot after shot, and it's designed for a bayonet to mount without interfering with performance. All in all, an extremely effective muzzle brake that keeps you both on target and reduces felt recoil. An absolute must have for your AK!
